Evolution- Change in gene pool of a population.
Mutation- Change in organisms DNA.
Divergent evolution- 2 species are the same but over time due to the environment they change.
Convergent evolution- 2 different species but develop similar traits due to adapting to different environments.
Parallel evolution- 2 or more separate species in the
same environment
develop similar adaptation.
Artificial selection- Nature provide the variation , and humans select variations they find useful.
Natural selection- T
he process whereby organisms better adapted to their environment survive and produce more offspring.
Struggle for Existence- Members (each species) competing regularly to obtain resources.
Fitness- Ability of something to survive and reproduce in a specific environment.
Descent with modification- Principle that each living species descended from another species.
Common decent- All living an extinct species have a common ancestor.
Small-scale evolution- Changes in gene frequency in a population from one generation to the next.
Large-scale evolution- The descent of different species from a common ancestor over many generations.
Genetic drift- I
s when chance events cause changes in frequencies of one or more forms of a gene in a population.
Gene flow- Is any movement of genes from one population to another and is an important source of genetic variation.
Genetic variation- Variation
in 2 forms of gene
, both within and among populations.
